FREE SPEECH IN JEOPARDY: Cuba arrests dissident blogger Yoani Sanchez

The Enemy Expatriation Act (S.1698/H.R.3166) -...The Cuban government arrested the country's most popular blogger to prevent her from covering a trial. This actually happens everyday in our country. The bloggers regularly detained here may not be the most popular, but their deserving of free speech is crucial non the less.

With the Patriot Act, National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and a whole host of presidential Executive Orders, the United States is on the verge of seeing this sort of government control and censorship of truth reach an all time high.

BAD BOYS! Baltimore Police Continue Attacks On Citizens With Cameras

By A.F. James MacArthur Ph.A.L.

Am I the only one sick and tired of hearing about the Baltimore Police Department attacking law abiding citizens? How many more lawsuits and accompanying large settlements will it take before we have a mayor and city council that says enough is enough? Leadership starts at the top. Last I checked, the mayor and city council run the city. The police commissioner answers to them.

If the mayor says I need your men to knock it off, and means its, he either does it, or that's his job. Does anyone really believe there's any genuine interest in reforming this force by our city  leaders?

Does The Winner Of The Debate Really Matter?

By A.F. James MacArthur Ph.A.L.

One things that's not debatable is that Baltimore is in bad, bad shape. In a city often resembling a mid-east war zone more than a modern American metropolis, the old adage all politics is local couldn't possible be more appropriate. With just barely a month left to go, and being called one of the most important elections ever (haven't we heard this before?), last nights presidential debate was most possibly the most watched in history. But what does it all mean?

Presidential elections are important in determining the direction of our country, but when you bring it on home, ask yourself; will who's sitting in the White House make my streets cleaner, ease traffic congestion, or improve the woeful high rate of high school drop-outs in Baltimore City?

English: In January 2009, President of the Uni...
Your Mayor and City Council are more important.
The truth is, while the debates serve an important function, we should be careful not to get so caught up in the theatrics and the rhetoric, that we lose sight of the many serious issues we face as soon as we step out our front door. Baltimore is dying a slow death and to an observant eye, it seems very little is being done restore it.

As exciting as it is to see more people than ever engaged in politics, the mood is tempered once reality sets in and you realize many of the same people excited to run out and vote for Obama have little interest or desire to take part in doing something about improving this city.

Sad but true, it's gonna take a whole lot more than voting for the president to lift this city from down in the dumps.

REALITY CHECK

While you sat with your eyes glued to the television watching the debate, three more people in your city were gunned down, seeing their life snuffed away in the blink of an eye. The screen shot below from The Baltimore Sun says it all. Can you tell me one more time how Romney or Obama would fix this?

Who Won the Debate? For Most It Seems Clear

My audio commentary on reaction to the debates. Smartphone friendly and downloadable!

Sometimes I Have A Lot To Say

CAIRO, EGYPT - JANUARY 27: In this photo illu...
For anyone of my over 2000 followers on Twitter, seeing me suddenly launch into a spontaneous rant is hardly shocking. Matter of fact, if it goes too long in between vitriolic tirades, there's folks who actually check on me asking if everything's OK. It was never my mission, but since joining the social media network, I've since been largely defined by this habit.

To those who relish these rants, this morning was did not disappoint. They got an early morning fix of me shooting from the hip as I fired away into the Twitterverse. Funny thing, with these outbursts I'm never sure where they may lead nor when they'll end. Being consciously aware that folks are busy and have little tolerance to never ending diatribe, I make a conscious effort to curb the stream of consciousness.

Come to think about it, I suppose my ability to go on and on is what made me good at talk radio. Some of you reading this have no doubt heard me on local radio. My experience and catalog of radio work is much more vast than what's easily discoverable via internet sources. Indeed, I started in radio, more specifically talk radio, long before radio was online.

Much of my audio archives exist on dusty old cassette tapes and CD's sitting in some moldy box in a damp basement somewhere.

When it comes to blogging, I'm mediocre at best. Infrequent updates and sporadic posts following no theme or rhythm have come to characterize my style.

Ironically, I know all the secrets to being a good blogger and building an audience of loyal followers. Adhering to this is another story. I imagine  it also exposes some of what my motivations for doing this may or may not be.

A lot of my "media" work, whether writing, speaking or radio or recording podcasts, twitter, facebook etc., are for deeply personal reasons having little to do with building an audience. If for some reason you've managed to read this far, I sincerely thank you. For those of you who've followed me through one medium or another for some time, I'm glad you're along for the ride. I make no guarantees about the future except to say: it ain't over yet.

For Creep Cops Excuses Abound

Early draft written and posted via Smartphone
________________________________________________________________

By A.F. James MacArthur

"There's nothing I hate more than a dirty cop." I remember those words well. As I sat in my chair at the police academy, the instructor from internal affairs said this with such a serious tone we knew he meant business. The class was about integrity and professional behavior.

That was a couple decades ago. Looking back through the years as I've gone to battle against bad and crooked cops, and even fought for and assisted honest hard working ones, a few things jump out at me.

No matter how egregious the offense, no matter how brutal the act, despite having ample evidence, there will always be some who instinctively play devil's advocate for cops behaving badly. Some make blatant excuses, while others attempt to downplay and minimize brutal behavior. I've heard many variations of excuses offered, but after a while the theme of a repeating pattern starts to emerge.

One of my favorites is: like any organization, you're gonna have good people and bad people working there. This is typically said to downplay allegations of systematic misconduct on a police force.

Really? So this is a reason not to demand a higher stand of professional conduct from those sworn to protect and serve?

Let's analyse this a moment. If I go to McDonald's and the guy in the kitchen is having a bad day, I might get soggy fries, or maybe my burger may be missing a pickle. When a cop is having a bad day, its a different story.

Police behaving badly leads to folks being hurt. People become victims of unnecessary force. Inncocent citizens are sent to jail with flimsy or fabricated probable cause. Evidence is manufactured. In extreme cases, people lose their lives.

This is no small or trivial matter. Few occupational positions in our society gives one single individual so much power and authority to royally ruin someone's day, merely on a whim if they please.

From the brutal Nazi oppression towards the Jews in the second World War, to the disproportionate minority victims of rampant abuse in the war on the streets of modern American cities, its easy to pretend its not happening when its not happening to you. When its never happened to anyone you know, and when you simply don't want to believe such a thing could take place.

Choosing not to believe abuse runs rampant and continually making excuses does not change the realitiy of incidents actually taking place. To those falling victim, the ever present cell phone camera and other modern recording devices coupled with the speed of the internet has proven to be a much needed game changer.

All the low down dirty cops out there should just know this; like the theme of the once popular TV show "Cops," the bad boys they're coming for just could be you. What you gonna do?

In a future article, we'll look more into how modern technology in the hands of citizens has dramatically changed the way police brutality and misconduct investigations take place. Feel free to comment and give feedback on this piece.

At The Scene Of The Crime -- It's Been An Eventful Week So Far

It started with mass mayhem, a mob scene and a shooting in Towson early Sunday morning. A broad daylight shooting on Pennsylvania Avenue hours later. Followed up by a murder on Chesterfield Ave in East Baltimore that very night. That's three crime scenes in one day.

Wednesday morning was a man found dead (also murder) on Old York Road, leading up to a double shooting, including a four-year-old boy that night in Waverly. Each of these events found me live-on-scene, reporting via twitter, updating several thousand readers with the latest news of crime and grime on the gritty streets of Charm City.
The incident in Towson was actually broken by me on twitter. Besides myself, there were no reporters ever on scene, at what would become one of the bigger local crime stories of the week. It's not uncommon for me to be first on location or first with the news.

In most cities this would be an eventful week for the average newspaper reporter, but for this reTIRED crime correspondent, it was just a small sample of how hectic things get covering the breaking news crime beat in Baltimore.

To be honest, this has been more or less an average week. Folks in Baltimore have grown so used to a high level of violence, that what seems horrific and terrifying to people living in other places, is now quite routine and normal in Baltimore. In this city, the crime truly never stops and the violence knows no bounds.

The News Comes To Me

People unfamiliar with my crime reporting exploits could be forgiven for thinking I'm some sort of police scanner addicted, always on the go news hound, but the truth is somewhat different. More often than not, minding my own business, I suddenly find myself at the scene of the crime. Might sound unbelievable to some, but I promise you it really does happen that way. At first I had trouble coming to grips with it, but I've learned to accept and embrace it.

The sheer volume of crime and violence that's taken place in my immediate vicinity all throughout this city is staggering. Whether I'm simply driving down the street and come upon a scene just begging to unfold, or out for a walk and hear sporadic gunfire nearby, people who've followed me over the years know I simply have a nose for the news.

It should be made clear, while this week has found me at a number of incidents, I'm still technically retired, so there should be no expectations that this is some sort of return or comeback and that this will continue. No longer a staff writer at a news website, or crew member at a radio station, I'm simply a man with a smartphone, lurking in the shadows. The one, the only, Baltimore Spectator.

DOUBLE SHOOTING: Four Year Old Boy & Mother Shot

Story & photo by A.F. James MacArthur

A four year old boy suffered a gunshot wound to the arm and is being treated at a local hospital. The boy's mother was also shot during the same incident which took place about 9:45 p.m.
900 block of Gorsuch Ave., scene of  Wednesday night double shooting
Police say the double shooting on the 900 block of Gorsuch Ave., in the Better Waverly neighborhood of north Baltimore, appears to be domestic related, with the victims knowing their shooter. A person of interest is being sought.

While on scene, a young boy about seven years old was seen by this writer being escorted by police to a waiting police car. The boy who appeared to be a witness was heard saying "he got shot right here" while gesturing.

A Baltimore Police statement on twitter stated both victims are expected to survive.

The incident was a few blocks away from a homicide discovered early Wednesday morning in the 3600 block of Old York Rd. At that incident, a man appeared to have been shot several times during the night and managed to make it inside his house before succumbing to his wounds and being discovered by members of his family the next morning.

HOLY DASHCAM-- Raw Video: Batman Pulled Over By Montgomery County Police

Either these cops were afraid to give Batman a ticket, or rich guys catch all the breaks.

There's just so many places I can go with this video; but for the sake of not losing my mind I won't. A Montgomery County Cop once took me to jail for going 5 miles over the speed limit (true story). Clearly being rich, and anyone who knows Batman know his quite wealthy, allows one all sorts of privilege with the police.

This is why dashcams should be mandatory in ALL police cars. There are two versions here. The first is the link to raw video straight off the cops car mounted camera with no outside commentary. The second is the embedded video seen in the square with narration via Anderson Cooper.

MESSAGE TO ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT/INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES

To all those who willfully, deliberately and routinely violate the civil rights of law abiding American Citizens; Yes, you're powerful. Sure, you're everywhere. But this is still America, and the Constitution of the United States Of America still reigns supreme as the law of the land. The Baltimore Spectator will vigorously and aggressively defend against any and all attempts at spying and suppression. Let it be known to all that we are already aware of the regular monitoring and shadowing attempts. There is nothing to hide, but cross the line and there will be hell to pay.

In the end, efforts to impinge upon the freedoms of the people will ultimately fail. Some of us may get taken out in the ongoing battle for true and lasting freedom, but as I've said many times before, and will say till the day I die or get taken out by you goons, THERE ARE MORE OF US, THAN THERE ARE OF YOU.
