Baltimore Police announce several arrests in recent homicides

For a police department currently closing well below half of all murders taking place, rapid arrests of suspects is both noteworthy and rare.

Keyon Jackson, 26, charged in killing of Nate Wheeler Jr

Davon Vennie, charged in killing of Nate Wheeler Jr.

In a press conference Monday, Baltimore Police Deputy Commissioner Kevin Davis said Davon Vennie and Keyon Jackson were both arrested for July 2 murder of Nate Wheeler Jr.

Few details, including a motive have been released on the case.

Police also announced the arrest of Larry Dixon, for the murder of his nephew Keith Glascoe, Friday night. The incident took place inside a home on the 3400 block of W. Caton Ave.

While children played nearby, and normal life carried on in East Baltimore, police said a man was shot in the head Sunday afternoon on Kennedy Ave. near the intersection of E. 20th St.

He died a short time later in an area hospital. Police did not release the victim ID, nor a motive or information on a possible suspect.

When The Baltimore Spectator arrived on scene, a pool of blood on the sidewalk, and a baseball cap circled by evidence markers showed the spot where the victim was gunned down.

Surrounded by many falling apart, decrepit and abandoned houses, the neighborhood itself seemed like a place lacking life.

By Sunday evening tributes and remembrances had begun pouring onto social media for Edward Burroughs, who friends identified as the individual killed. They called him Eddie.

Police did not say whether a motive or suspects were known in this case and state the investigation is active and ongoing.

BALTIMORE - (MINS) Baltimore Police responded Friday night, to the 3400 block of W. Caton Ave., in the St. Joseph Community of West Baltimore, for reports of a man shot in the chest. According to the departments Twitter account, the man died a short while later at an area hospital.

Although not confirmed by officials, the victim is said to be Keith Glascoe, 50.

A person familiar with Glascoe described the incident as a family dispute gone bad. The individual said Glascoe was well known in the area, often performing errands and odd jobs for elderly neighbors. From taking out the trash, and other housework, to making runs to the store, Glascoe was described as someone whose presence will be greatly missed by not just immediate family, but the greater community, as he was relied upon by many.

While on scene The Baltimore Spectator observed investigators going in and out of a single family home on the corner, as officers stood guard immediately outside. Eventually investigators left the house with evidence, including a long object wrapped in brown paper.

As sounds of sorrow from a woman crying inconsolably could be heard coming from inside the house, a small group of possible family and or friends stood outside on the sidewalk while a detective spoke to them taking notes.

The victim appears to have been shot inside the residence. Neighbors said they didn't hear gunshots. At the scene, sounds of a continuous barrage of individual pre-Independence Day fireworks filled the air. It is conceivable that the sound of a gunshot could have easily been missed in between firecracker blasts.

A week prior, on 27 June, there was another homicide only a block away. Like this incident, a man was shot in the chest on the 3300 block of W. Caton Ave. .

Police have not named the suspect nor given a motive and state the homicide is still considered an ongoing investigation.

The incident was the second fatal shooting in two days,including the gunning down Thursday, of Nate Wheeler Jr., while he worked at a West Baltimore construction site on N. Fulton Ave. near Druid Hill Park.

Both incidents are notable for persons of interest being taken into custody almost immediately. A highly unusual occurrence in a city where more than half of all murders are never solved.

At both crime scenes, police did not send a spokesperson out to provide details to media reporting from the scene. Also as of Saturday morning, identification of the deceased and suspects involved still haven't been officially released.

Man Shot And Killed At West Baltimore Construction Site

UPDATE: 6 JULY 2015: Baltimore police announced two men were arrested for this murder.

UPDATE: 1900 EST 3 JULY 2015

Baltimore Police have charged Keyon Jackson, 22, in yesterday's murder of Nate Wheeler Jr.(pictured), 31., court records show.

Police still haven't been publicly ID'd Wheeler as the victim.

A witness told the Baltimore Spectator suspects were pursued from scene by officers who heard the shots. This led to big commotion in Hampden. Baltimore Police still haven't released any details yet.

In November Jackson pleaded guilty to intimidating witness/juror, and was sentenced to 15 years in jail, but 13 years, 6 months were suspended. He was already out on the streets.

BALTIMORE - (MINS) Baltimore Police responded to a call for a shooting Thursday afternoon, in the vicinity of the 2200 block of N. Fulton Ave. Responding officers found Nate "Man" Wheeler Jr., 31, shot multiple times. His birthday was the day before.

Witnesses tell The Baltimore Spectator, Wheeler had been working on a construction project in an area considered an extension of Druid Hill Park. While operating a Bobcat, a gunman approached and opened fire from extremely close range.

An area resident ran to the scene and observed Wheeler barely breathing and clinging to life. By the time authorities arrived, Wheeler was pronounced dead on the scene.

Another witness stated he saw Baltimore Police pursuing two individuals immediately after the shooting.

While police were on scene investigating, and with Wheeler's body still present, emotional family members began to arrive. One woman could be heard crying out loud, "why did they have to do this to my brother? He didn't deserve this."

Another lady, overcome with grief and emotion had to be treated and transported by a Baltimore Fire Dept. medic unit, after what appeared to be a panic or anxiety attack.

Before the scene was cleared, the crowd of onlookers -- with many seeming to be friends and family -- grew to nearly 100 people.

Friends who wished to remain anonymous describe Wheeler as a devoted father, and loving uncle, a source of strength and support for his entire extended family.
Wheeler grew up in East Baltimore and is said to have worked for Allied Construction for over 10 years, where he's said to have been a highly valued and committed employee.

A motive for the shooting has not been stated.

Medics were called to the scene to assist

with the traumatic impact of the violence on a loved one needing assistance.

Baltimore Police reported detaining two individuals, deemed "persons of interest," a short time after the shooting, but have not released their identity or clarified whether they've been charged.

The case is considered an active investigation. Homicide detectives ask anyone with information to call 410-396-2100.

In the last two years, eight people have been shot on the 2200 blk of N. Fulton Ave. Five -- including Wheeler -- have died.

BALTIMORE - (MINS) In less than one hour Monday night, three people were shot, in two separate incidents. They happened less than a mile apart from each other.

Police have not indicated any connection.

One of the victims has died, and another is suffering grave injuries so serious, due to their severity homicide detective were called to the scene. By the time this is published, he may very well be dead.

"Monday night's shooting in front the Red Fox Liquor store appears to be the sixth person shot on that block in two years. Four have died!"

Incident 1

At 9:16 p.m. Baltimore Police responded to the corner of Pennsylvania and N. Fulton avenues. Officers found a 33 year-old man suffering from at least one gunshot wound directly in front of the Red Fox Liquor store.

Unconfirmed reports state the man was shot in the face.

After being transported to an area hospital, the man was pronounced dead a short time after arrival.

The incident happened at busy, high traffic intersection.

A series of crime scene markers could be seen trailing down the sidewalk and onto the street.

Despite the victim possibly being hit only once, it is unclear whether the shooter may have fired more rounds but missed.

A Very Violent Block

Monday night's shooting in front the Red Fox Liquor store appears to be the sixth person shot on that block in two years. Four have died!

In February a man was shot on the 2200 block of N. Fulton Ave.

August 2013 also saw a man shot next to the elementary school on the exact same block.

Along with those incidents, a shooting resulting in a triple murder happened there -- nearly to the date -- two years ago.

Police spokesman Det. Jeremy Silbert stated the investigation was active and ongoing and at the time of this writing there were no known suspects or motives.

In the report below, recorded live on scene, while still at the first incident, the chaos surrounding the dispatch of the second shooting of the night can be clearly heard.

While The Baltimore Spectator was still on scene at the homicide located at Pennsylvania and N. Fulton avenues, police could be seen running to their cars then speeding off, lights and sirens as a call for another shooting could be heard coming over their two way radios.

Police were dispatched to the vicinity of N. Monroe St. and W, Lafayette Ave. -- only a mile away -- in Sandtown-Winchester at 10:09 p.m for reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival officers found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds throughout his body, laying on the sidewalk. He was listed in critical conditions, but homicide detectives were requested due to the severity of his injuries.

A witness describes seeing the victim [name withheld pending confirmation] girlfriend desperately trying to render first aid to the man shot by placing pressure on the bleeding wounds.

Shortly afterward, about a block away on Harlem Ave., officers found a 19 year old man who had been shot in the shoulder. He was stated to have non-life-threatening injuries, and was in stable condition, according to police.

Like the earlier incident, police have given no known motives, nor named any suspects in the shootings, nor have the victims been identified.

In 2014 Baltimore Police solved less than half of the homicides committed in the city.

UPDATE: A man found dead in a car this afternoon, initially declared suspicious -- without a stated cause of death -- has now been determined to be a homicide. Saturday night Justin Fenton tweeted: "Update: Man found dead in a car today in 3800 blk of Ridgewood Ave was shot to death. ID'd as Kevin Mason, 29"

It it unknown when or precisely where Mason was when he was actually shot.

BALTIMORE -- (MINS) A man was shot in the head Friday night on the 1600 block of W. North Ave., near the intersection of Pennsylvania Ave.

The victim's current condition is unknown, but police say he survived the attack and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Friday's victim was one of four people shot on the exact same block within the past six months.

Like the majority of all shootings in the city, Baltimore Police have stated no motives or known suspects in connection with the incident.

Many hours later, crime scene tape was still erected around the scene and a Baltimore Police car appeared to be guarding it. A fairly uncommon occurrence.

Although the shooting happened shortly after 8:00 p.m., Baltimore Police delayed alerting the public for over two hours before posting the incident on the department's twitter page.

An Extremely Violent Corridor

The area surrounding the Penn-North Metro subway station has seen an extremely high rate of violence over the years. On just the 1600 block of W. North Ave. alone, numerous assaults and robberies have happened, in addition to the shootings.

8 August 2014 -- DOUBLE SHOOTING: A man and woman were shot on the 1600 block of W. North Ave.

13 December 2014 -- SHOOTING: Man walking down the street was shot at location of the 1600 block of W. North Ave.

The man in the August double shooting was a hospital walk in. The man shot in December was a walk in as well. All survived their attacks.

The cases remain open, with no motive or suspects.

Based on last years 45% clearance rate for homicide cases, it appears unlikely these non fatal shootings will ever be solved.

With a pattern of continual crime and bold attacks, this area on one of the city's busiest east-west thoroughfares, seems like an obvious hot spot. Lacking any special attention and innovative strategy, the violence is likely to continue unabated.

February has had record low temperatures with back to back days of sustained single digit temperatures, mixed with winter precipitation. The weather appears to have slowed down the violence in contrast to January when the city saw 25 murders.

Another Silent Shooting?

Friday's incident was one of only ~~three~~ four shootings in the city in the past week. There were no homicides. However, a quick internet search brought few results of local media outlets reporting the incident.

At one point not long ago, many shootings were routinely ignored by Baltimore media. A person following the news was left with a false impression on the true level of violence in the city.

Other times, multiple murders are crammed together under one headline. Some of the incidents buried at the bottom of a different story, getting only a sentence or two mention.

Most of the media never follow up with victim ID's once they are learned. Leaving those who are murdered forever rendered as mere statistics based on a date and location.

* While this story was being written, Baltimore Police tweeted an incident of a body being found in a car. No indication of foul play was initially indicated.
