Even for a place grown accustomed to a daily onslaught of violence and mayhem, the incident that took place late Tuesday night in the Poppleton Community of West Baltimore was one of unspeakable horror.

On the 900 block of W. Fayette St., just a short distance away from the University of Maryland Baltimore campus (UMB), area residents said the night had been quiet until shooting shattered the silence.

The Baltimore Sun reports, University of Maryland Police say two vans pulled up to the blocked just before 11 p.m., when two gunmen got out and began to unleash a hail of gunfire on the block.

Two men and two women were cut down by the barrage of bullets.

An hour after the incident, with over 100 people looking on, a lifeless body laying in a pool of blood was still on the sidewalk. Police held up a white sheet attempting to obscure the view of the corpse, but they were unable to block every angle.

While investigators processed the scene, several dozen spent shell casings littered the area, Evidence markers labeled as high as the number were 40 visible on the ground.

Onlookers seemed to be in a state of shock. Many with stunned, blank expressions on their face, as if still processing the horror that had taken place.

Crying and expressions of sorrow could be heard from all around as folk in the crowd reacted to the killings. Others exchanged hugs and hand holding. Some seemed upset as words and body language expressing anger was used.

One woman who declined to identify herself, told The Baltimore Spectator one of the victims was her
son's father.

A white van from the Office of The Chief Medical Examiner, with a gurney sitting beside it, stood by awaiting the okay from homicide investigators to remove the victim from the scene.

Police initially stated one of the victims had died at the scene, with the remaining three being transported to Maryland Shock Trauma center, just a few short blocks away. Before the investigation was concluded, the death toll had increased to three, with two of the victims being pronounced dead at the hospital. The fourth victim is said to be in stable condition.

The identity of the victims hasn't been released, but police say the deceased individuals are comprised of two men and a woman.
Police investigate quadruple shooting scene in W. Baltimore

While a motive for the shooting has not been disclosed, The Baltimore Sun reported that five days prior, on July 2, University police said shots were fired into a vehicle travelling on the same block of W. Fayette St. The passenger was injured from bullets that entered the vehicle. Raising the speculation of potential retaliation behind Tuesdays shooting.

An area resident wishing to remain anonymous, speaking about the neighborhood, told The Baltimore Spectator although things have been relatively quiet in the area leading up to the shooting, the calm was deceptive. He said there were numerous would-be gunmen laying in wait for their opportunity to deal death on the streets, as he hinted at further possible bloodshed.

Man Shot And Killed At West Baltimore Construction Site

UPDATE: 6 JULY 2015: Baltimore police announced two men were arrested for this murder.

UPDATE: 1900 EST 3 JULY 2015

Baltimore Police have charged Keyon Jackson, 22, in yesterday's murder of Nate Wheeler Jr.(pictured), 31., court records show.

Police still haven't been publicly ID'd Wheeler as the victim.

A witness told the Baltimore Spectator suspects were pursued from scene by officers who heard the shots. This led to big commotion in Hampden. Baltimore Police still haven't released any details yet.

In November Jackson pleaded guilty to intimidating witness/juror, and was sentenced to 15 years in jail, but 13 years, 6 months were suspended. He was already out on the streets.

Information reported by Justin Fenton of the Baltimore Sun contributed heavily to this update.

BALTIMORE - (MINS) Baltimore Police responded to a call for a shooting Thursday afternoon, in the vicinity of the 2200 block of N. Fulton Ave. Responding officers found Nate "Man" Wheeler Jr., 31, shot multiple times. His birthday was the day before.

Witnesses tell The Baltimore Spectator, Wheeler had been working on a construction project in an area considered an extension of Druid Hill Park. While operating a Bobcat, a gunman approached and opened fire from extremely close range.

An area resident ran to the scene and observed Wheeler barely breathing and clinging to life. By the time authorities arrived, Wheeler was pronounced dead on the scene.

Another witness stated he saw Baltimore Police pursuing two individuals immediately after the shooting.

While police were on scene investigating, and with Wheeler's body still present, emotional family members began to arrive. One woman could be heard crying out loud, "why did they have to do this to my brother? He didn't deserve this."

Another lady, overcome with grief and emotion had to be treated and transported by a Baltimore Fire Dept. medic unit, after what appeared to be a panic or anxiety attack.

Before the scene was cleared, the crowd of onlookers -- with many seeming to be friends and family -- grew to nearly 100 people.

Friends who wished to remain anonymous describe Wheeler as a devoted father, and loving uncle, a source of strength and support for his entire extended family.
Wheeler grew up in East Baltimore and is said to have worked for Allied Construction for over 10 years, where he's said to have been a highly valued and committed employee.

A motive for the shooting has not been stated.

Medics were called to the scene to assist
with the traumatic impact of the violence on a loved one needing assistance.
Baltimore Police reported detaining two individuals, deemed "persons of interest," a short time after the shooting, but have not released their identity or clarified whether they've been charged.

The case is considered an active investigation. Homicide detectives ask anyone with information to call 410-396-2100.

In the last two years, eight people have been shot on the 2200 blk of N. Fulton Ave. Five -- including Wheeler -- have died.

Three Shot Thursday Within Three Hours In Baltimore

After Quiet Day, Silence Shattered With Shootings At Night

Police investigate shooting, 1800 block Ruxton Ave.

James MacArthur/The Baltimore Spectator
UPDATE: Was a double shooting. One victim deceased. Per Justin Fenton, victim ID'd as Delmonte Thomas, age 20.

With three fourths of the day gone, Thursday nearly ended without a single in shooting in Baltimore. But three separate shootings kept Baltimore on pace for 2013 being a particularly violent year in the city.

First there was the man police say was shot around 9:45 p.m.on the 5900 block of Moravia Rd. in Northeast Baltimore.  No information was given on his condition. Police gave no information on suspects or motives in this case.

A short time later, a man was shot in the chest, on the 1800 block of Ruxton Ave., at 10:20 p.m. Homicide detectives were requested to the scene, but police have not stated whether the victim succombed to his wounds, or if he survived.

The location is just blocks away from Coppin University in West Baltimore.

The Baltimore Spectator was on scene, feet-on-the-street, at Ruxton Ave. a short time after the shooting Thursday night. While there, a "walk-in" shooting at a hospital emergency room was overheard on the police radio. The Baltimore Spectator posted this information on twitter. An hour later, Baltimore Police tweeted the incident, confirming what was initially overheard.

No further information was given on this shootingl.

The incidents come on the eve of the third running of the controversial Baltimore Grand Prix. The event hopes to attract visitors to the city. However, preliminary reports show large vacancies in area hotels. Sources say ticket sales -- for the car race held on city streets -- have been very low.

Although rarely cited, Baltimore's ongoing violence may play a role in reduced tourism and visitors to the city.

EXCLUSIVE: Mom of 15 Year Old Killed In West Baltimore Speaks

15 year old Deshaun Jones was killed Saturday in West Baltimore, when someone opened fire on a group of people sitting outside on the 1500 block of W. Fayette St. Police say an illegal dice game was taking place, however, according to witnesses, Jones was not part of the game.

Police were dispatched to the 2200 block of N. Fulton Ave. on Tuesday evening, around 5:12 p.m, for a report of a man shot.

According to a Baltimore Police twitter post, an adult male was shot in the upper torso at the location. Little more is known about the incident, including the condition of the victim, and whether there are any suspects or a motive.

Although there were no reporters at the scene Tuesday, in March there was a triple shooting that left two women and a man dead on the very same block. That incident was widely reported, but apparently more violence in the same location did not warrant digging deeper.

Seven shot, 15 year old killed, in West Baltimore

15 year old aspiring Baltimore rapper, Deshaun Jones, seen here in a music video, center, with a pistol in his hand, was killed Saturday when he was shot along with 6 other people in West Baltimore.

Seven people were shot Saturday night on the 1500 block of W. Fayette St. A teenage boy, age 15, was fatally wounded when someone, or possibly more than one person, opened fire on people engaged in what police called an "illegal dice game."

Initial reports saw fluctuating victim counts. Police states the reason for this is because three victims were transported to area hospitals via Baltimore Fire Department medic units, while four others shot in the same incident were later discovered as "walk-in" patients in emergency rooms.

Baltimore police said they had few details and were not certain of a description of the shooter(s), or whether there was more than one person shooting.

Although not yet confirmed, the shooting seems to have the most victims of a single shooting in the city since 2009. That year 12 people were shot in a backyard cookout in E. Baltimore, including a pregnant woman and a two year old baby. A total of 17 people would be shot that same night.

Saturday was the second Saturday in a row seeing a multi-victim shooting, including one where a juvenile was shot last weekend.

That weekend there were several multiple shootings, including one in East Baltimore. A three year old was shot as adults tried to shield him with their bodies.

Saturdays shooting incident took place at the same time a large contingent of police, including the #FoxTrot helicopter, converged on a block party on E. 28th St. near Greenmount Ave., in the Barclay neighborhood. Police said an extremely large crowd had swarmed the location and although no violence took place, they wanted to disperse the crowd as a precautionary measure.
