Dixon Defenders, I Got The Proof, Sheila Don't Care

“If they shoot it out among themselves, that’s all fine and good. . .” – Mayor Sheila Dixon.
As the words came out, while Dixon stood next to Police Commissioner Frederick Bealefeld, I almost couldn’t believe what I heard. Then again, why should I be surprised? Wasn’t the Mayor just finally admitting how she’s really felt all along? A quick scan around the room revealed other looks just as shocked and astonished as the one I must have had. Should we replace B E L I E V E with “Baltimore, it is what it is?”

Over the years I’ve alternated between being an open defender and a harsh critic of Sheila Dixon. At times I’ve felt pride in her accomplishments. Often this has been quickly replaced with shame and embarrassment concerning her actions. First as City Council president, and now as Mayor. There are areas where Dixon deserves applause, but when it comes to leadership within the realm of public safety, Sheila Dixon’s administration is a colossal failure no better than the last. What’s a record decrease if we’re still leading the nation for crime and violence? Nothing to be proud of that’s what. How many American cities can brag about having routine violence on par with Baghdad or Mogodishu (look up the current rates, we're on par)?

Before you fire off your emails complaining about me piling on and not supporting the Mayor, you need to hear me out. I support anyone that expresses genuine concern, and takes concrete, realistic solution based action, in a holistic approach to turn around this filthy, dying, decaying city. It’s not all about downtown. We don’t need a continued, after the fact reaction to things as they happen. What happened on Ashland Street ultimately comes as no surprise to anyone with knowledge of the players involved including the Mayors Council on Criminal Justice. It’s time to stop putting band aids on the bleeding when you know the cut on the surface is just the outlet, not the source. The deep internal hemorrhaging will cause a slow death long before it catches the eye of the public.

We cannot ignore the less well to do neighborhoods and their many social and economic ills that have plagued them in favor of downtown development and preserving the Inner Harbor. The need to keep a tourist friendly safe zone is imperative, but if life for the locals is a living hell, the city’s reputation will continue to precede itself. Remember Madame Mayor, “a killing per day keeps the tourists away.” And they don’t care where it’s happening.

Mayor Sheila Dixon cares about Baltimore, but only so much. Now that five new indictments have been tossed at Ms. Dixon, I expect as a human being, her capacity for care and concern; other than on matters of self preservation and survival; are quite limited. No matter what she says, this is her current priority.

If it ain’t about money . . . Nothing greater expressed the notion of two Baltimore's than Dixon’s statement at Monday’s press conference, regarding the 19 overnight shootings that stretched from Sunday into Monday.

Pardon me, but who are “they” Mayor Dixon? Young black men? High school dropouts? People living below a certain income level in a town where all around the message is clear there is no hope and no bright prospects for the future. Not for them at least, who ever “they” may be. After all, you said you don’t even care if they kill themselves. That tells me in your eyes they’re worthless, and you just don’t care.

After Claiming Demons Made Her Kill, Mom Convicted Of Murdering Her Own Four Children

After secluding, starving, abusing, murdering, then living with the mumified bodies of her four children, Banita Jacks has finally been convicted of murder.

D.C. Superior Court Judge Frederick Weisberg found Jacks guilty on 11 counts, including four counts of cruelty to children, four counts of felony murder and three counts of first-degree, premeditated murder. Weisberg said he could not find Jacks guilty of first-degree, premeditated murder while armed in the death of Brittany because prosecutors could not prove that the knife found next to the 17-year-old’s dead body was the murder weapon.

Is there a special part of hell for this type of person?

Joseph Bannerman of the Baltimore Police's Violent Crime Impact Division seems to have had some violent impact of his own. At least to his former girlfriend. Incidentally, Judge Weinstein is the same judge that once questioned whether The Baltimore Spectator's A.F. James MacArthur was a real journalist or not.

Boston Cop To Be Suspended For Racist Slur - Arrest-Gate Fallout Continues

Boston Police officer and weekend warrior National Guardsman Justin Barrett apparently thought it was ok to refer to Dr. Henry Louis Gates and a "jungle monkey." The Beantown cop has been stripped of his badge and gun and is expected to be fired at any moment. The best part of this story is, now Barrett has issued an apology saying; "I am not a racist," but he has admitted to using the slur.

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino said, "he's gone, g-o-n-e. I don't care, it's like cancer, you don't keep those cancers around." “I just say that we want to rid our department of the cancer, and that is what we did—rid the department of cancer. All police officers I know don’t condone any of that. An individual preaching hate has no place in our society."

Arab Woman Stabbed To Death In German Courtroom

Not sure what kind of security they have in German courts, but this is rediculous. A 32-year old Egyptian woman, Marwa el-Sherbini was murdered in a Dresden court room. She was stabbed 18 times in front of her young son in an apparent hate crime. After her husband rushed to help, security officials stormed the court room and shot him.

Strangely, there has been ZERO coverage in the mainstream media.

While many in this country, both black and white claim Irish lineage, Prof. Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Sgt. James Crowley both go back to the same Irish roots.

As a black man with well documented Scottish-Irish ancestry, this is simply fascinating. There are those that may not look like me, act like me, may even be adversarial to me, and we could be from the same big family.

Bloody Night In Battleground Baltimore, 17 People Shot In 3 Hours, Several Fatalities

12 People Shot At Backyard BBQ Cookout

A woman 8 months pregnant and a 2 year old baby are among 12 people wounded after multiple gunmen opened fire on a backyard gathering around 9:05 p.m. Sunday night. Sources reaveled to The Baltimore Spectator that as many as five gunmen opened fire from a nearby alley creating a hail of bullets raining down on the gathering. Baltimore Police report numerous shell casings from spent bullets covering a signifcant area.

The violent incident occurred on the 2600 block of E. Ashland Ave. It marks what could be the largest single incident casualty count of any shooting in Baltimore History. Witnesses described a seen of sheer terror as people scrambled for cover from the barrage of gunfire.

Numerous calls were made to 911. Victims were transported to several area hospitals, some via Baltimore Fire Dept. ambulance, and others by private vehicles.

A family member wishing to remain anonymous said the gathering was a memorial for the shooting death of 16 year old Jerrod Reed. Reed was shot in the head on Sunday July 19, when an unknown gunman walked up and opened fire on him and another teenager near N. Kenwood Ave. and E. Monument St. The second teenage victim was not fatally wounded.

UPDATE: The accuracy of detail in the paragraph above may not be 100%. The Baltimore Sun has published the following which contradicts the above paragraph: According to law enforcement sources, at least two of the shooting incidents appeared to be connected. One of the victims at the cookout shooting was Steven Blackwell, 25, whose younger brothers were abducted last April in what police said was part of an escalating feud between rival drug organizations. Police sources at the time told The Baltimore Sun that the abductions may have set off a wave of as many as five retaliatory homicides over the course of three months last summer.

The Baltimore Spectator street team has also learned the cookout shooting may also have links to the murder of a woman found dead in a car at 4217 Erdman Ave. in the parking lot of the Club House Lounge on Saturday. A confidential source tells us a number of shootings over the last week, including several Sunday night are all connected.

Baltimore Police say so far there are no known suspects of motives to any of the shootings.

Several Unoccupied Cars Shot Shortly Before Incident

An unknown gunman shot several cars near the corner of Baltimore and Bond St around 11:15 p.m. Sunday night. Approximately an hour later, while Baltimore Police were still in the area, a car with three people inside was fired upon. At least nine shots were fired. Three shots hit the adult male driver, including a bullet wound to the head; leaving the man in critical condition as of this writing. A female passenger was also struck at least once, while a third male passenger managed to bail out the car and escape.

The female passenger struggled to take control of the car. An off duty member of the Baltimore Police Department driving in the area nearly collided with the white Lexus travelling at a high rate of speed and appearing out of control. The officer turned around to follow the car being driven by a female and subsequently discovered it was involved in a shooting that had just occurred.

Outside of Johns Hopkins Hospital witnesses say the woman was seen struggling to assist the man with multiple gunshot wounds walk into the emergency room. The man collapsed on the sidewalk and had to be carried in by Hopkins staff members.

Police spokesman, Agent Donny Moses said there are no known motives or victims at this time.

My Thoughts (CONDENSED) On The Arrest Of Dr. Henry Louis Gates

While I agree the situation may indeed not have been about race, there is still no doubt to me that Dr. Gates DID NOT commit a crime, and SHOULD NOT have been arrested, PERIOD! A free society cannot tolerate an environment where law enforcement is arresting citizens merely for being insulted. What about freedom of speech?

People hurl insults at each other everyday, but does this rise to the level of criminality? Is a law truly violated because your ego was bruised? I call your attention to the generic job category; LAW ENFORCEMENT, was Sgt. Crowley truly enforcing the law, perhaps to the letter, but certainly not the spirit of the law.

A bruised ego is not justification to take the major step of placing someone in custody. Having been a patrolman, plain clothes agent, and intelligence operator, I for one know that you don't go around arresting law abiding citizens in their own homes just because they pissed you off. Sometimes you gotta just smile, wave, and remove yourself from the situation. Sgt. Crowley is about to learn it's not worth it to unnecessarily engage with a citizen to escalate a situation that no longer called for police intervention.

I've been to Cambridge, MA. It's a rather small city. You would think a resident such as Gates who lived in the same dwelling for 15 years (probably longer than the dummy who called the police) has been there long enough for a cop to easily and quickly verify the call was a false alarm.

Lastly, I have to ask, why would an officer enter a home suspected of having two burglars, by himself, without being accompanied by back up?

Dr. Henry Louis Gates Should Be Happy

He could have been choked out!

Does this outrage you, call Oklahoma State Police (405) 425-2424, tell them Trooper Daniel Martin's behavior was unacceptable and should be punished!

The Profit Motive: Crime Does Pay

Frequent commentator and reader Thomas Paine has so eloquently articulated a concept we believe in, we decided to take his comments and make it a post to share with you. Enjoy.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In case you have not figured it out: CRIME DOES PAY.
There is no entity that benefits from crime more than the gov't. Street crime justifies government spending, increased taxation, and massive infringements on human freedom; all favorite delicacies of bureaucrats:

-crime is up we need more cops which entails increased government spending and taxation.

-crime is up we need more cameras which entails increased government spending and taxation.

-crime is up we need to pay the judges bet
ter which entails increased government spending and taxation.

-crime is up we need more police cars which entails increased government spending and taxation.

-crime is up we need more prisons which entails increased government spending and taxation.

-and on and on and on and on.

If you are in The "LEO" business and/or the criminal law business and/or the prison-parole-probation business crime, etc. crime is an investment opportunity with endless possibilities. The very last thing the Calvert Street Court Click wants is a reduction in crime despite what they say. The economics of the situation is set up such that the budgets of the aforementioned entities are directly proportional to the levels of crime in their territories.

So in answer to the question "Why are we not eliminating criminals?", I would answer why would anyone kill a goose that lays golden eggs?

Three Over Night Shootings - Within Three Hours - No Mention In Baltimore Sun

Already the conspiracy theorists are wondering if there is a concerted effort between the city and the media in suppressing or somehow limiting news of serious crime. It is interesting how the Sun will place a story title for one shooting/murder incident, and within the scant text that passes for a story, try to slip in a couple more. The Baltimore Spectator notes there has been a total of at least 25 shootings this week, but the majority did not make the news. Adding a twist, even the Baltiomore Police twitter, a normally reliable source, left of a random odd shooting or two this week.

Strange Reality? Spectator Speaks, The Street Answers?

On last nights radio broadcast, while ranting about there being no comprehensive crime strategy in Baltimore, I predicted to my co-host and guests there would be at least three more shootings by the next show. We signed off the air at 11:00 p.m. and by 11:02 p.m. the first shooting report came in, within two hours, there were two more. This is becoming a bit too easy.

Steve McNair Update: Convicted Felon Arrested For Selling Gun To Kazemi

The Associated Press is reporting the arrest by federal ATF agents of a convicted felon in Nashville, TN for allegedly providing the gun used by Sahel "Jenny" Kazemi in the July 4 murder/suicide. Adrian J. Gilliam Jr., 33, of LaVergne, Tenn., was arrested by agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

Video Gallery

Convicted felon sold McNair's girlfriend murder weapon

Police announced in a news conference last week that Kazemi purchased "a fully loaded nine millimeter pistol from a private individual" who met her in the parking lot of the mall where she worked as a waitress at a Dave & Busters restaurant. The same restaurant where McNair is reported to have first met her.

Kazemi met the man when she was trying to sell her car. She mentioned to him that she was looking to buy a gun and he told her he had one for sale, police said. The sale took place two days before McNair's shooting.

According to USA Today; McNair didn't leave a will and his widow Mechelle has filed court papers saying she and sons Tyler, 11, and Trenton, 6, are the heirs. Mechelle's probate filing also says she can't confirm whether the other two sons are actually his.

McNair earned more than $75 million during his 13-year NFL career with the Titans and Ravens, and the Tennessean says that so far no records have surfaced indicating he set up trust funds or completed any estate planning.

Friday Funk, Untitled Rambling Rant!

If this is Charm City, then perhaps many of the residents, particularly those living within the confines of the more exclusive Mobtown enclaves need a little refresher remedial course. I know some of you move to these neighborhoods so you don’t have to see folks who look like me. Never mind that Baltimore is 70% black, there’s nothing wrong with creating your own little haven within the hell that is Baltimore for so many.

When I’m out for a walk and you see me coming, there’s no need to clutch your handbags. Hurrying your pace won’t help much either. Really it’s rather pointless. Kinda like when swimming with sharks (I’ve done it!). Moving faster in a vain attempt to avoid perceived danger will not actually save you from attack, if that’s what’s coming. If I wanted to get you I could. Besides being a former track runner and football player, I’m still pretty quick. Point is, you’re ok, no really, I won’t hurt you, promise.

Then there are those of you with the nervous smile and the forced wave. Hey, I appreciate the effort. Even when your gesture seems as phony as a flight attendant at the end of trip, at least your trying.

Crossing the street is another move. I suppose when you’re not down at the Inner Harbor where the police would hassle someone like me, for your “protection,” especially if, God forbid, there were a few of us together (they’d call it a gang), you wind up being not quite sure what to do.

Relax though, it’s ok really. There’s nothing to worry about. There won’t be a major influx of us moving into the neighborhood anytime soon. Thanks to a variety of social and economic issues, most of us will remain beaten up, broken down and disillusioned, unable to figure out how to rise up above it all. We’ll be stuck in the neighborhoods where kids play on playgrounds where just moments before dead bodies laid.

The alleyways filled with trash is a version of colorful landscaping. After all, when you have a teeny lil house, with no yard, chances are, you have no where to store trash cans with a weeks worth of garbage. Guess that leaves some people little choice. Toss it out! Where? Anywhere! When? Anytime!

When you’ve been treated like garbage for generations, when your life is demonstrated to be worthless, when the Mayor and the Police continually refer to you in sub-human condescending terms, how can one be expected to aim high? And you call that charming?

Meghan McCain: 'Joe The Plumber Is A Dumba$$!'

Does it sound campy to say I love gay men?” asks Meghan McCain, sipping an iced tea at the nouveau-chic Hotel Palomar in Washington, D.C.’s Dupont Circle. Campy or not, the lovesick McCain has been ubiquitous this year, sallying forth on late-night TV -- Larry King Live, The Colbert Report, The Rachel Maddow Show -- to scold the Republican establishment for its social conservatism and stump for gay marriage. “If two people fall in love, they should have the option to get married just like I can,” she told Stephen Colbert, pointing out the inherent hypocrisy of a party that believes in keeping government out of people’s private lives -- except when those people are gay men and women.

Man Shot In Westport - South Baltimore

Baltimore Police report a man was shot in the head, throat and chest around 1:30 a.m. in the 2400 block of Maisel Ct. The man whose identity was not released, was transported to a local hospital and his condition remains unknown at this time. Police have not stated a motive nor information on any suspects.

The location is just blocks from where 19 year old Martie Williams Jr. was murdered in a house on March 22. That murder remains unsolved with no witnesses or motives being known.

Many residents of the area told the Baltimore Spectator team during a series of interviews that the area has been under the control of a prominent local gang. The residents state the area is a hotbed for heavy narcotics transaction and there is frequent violence that goes unreported.
