A 35-year-old man was shot at New Jersey Avenue and C Streets in Northwest, D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Pete Piringer says. Capitol Police spokeswoman Kimberly Schneider said "it's my understanding the suspect is dead."
A tourist visiting the area from out of town said "there were so many gunshots being fired my family got down."
Sources say the unidentified man was shot by a U.S. Capitol Police officer.
Witnesses say a white Mercedes was traveling at a high rate of speed away from Union Station toward a Capitol parking area, where the vehicle crashed into a barricade. That's when gunfire erupted.
Another witness, Dale Lanigan of Toledo, Ohio, described a similar scene, although he said two police cars gave chase. As the car went past him, Lanigan said, "the driver had one hand on the wheel and it looked like he was reaching for something."
