This is video is what you didn't hear about in the speech;
A couple days after Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon delivered her 2009 State of The City address, I was feeling a little inspired. This video is about some of the things you may have not heard in the speech.

Although I do understand why you are so mad about our Mayor and I get that our system is far from perfect. But after watching this trailer it really got me thinking.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that Baltimore has the highest reported AIDS rate? Is it because we here in Baltimore have the BEST hospitals in the world? Is it because of all those free clinics for people to get tested and receive free treatment?
Why do we have on of the highest rates of un-wed mothers giving birth? Who knows- but what about all those places offering support to those mothers? I am still with the father of my first child who I had at 19, we are now married, but I guess I would fall into that statistic... I send my children to great schools, own my home and have a great career, not to mention take my children to sports and doctors appointments and provide everything they need. No thanks to documentaries that make it look like an awful thing.
All of our vacant buildings? What about O'Malley and his efforts to revitalize our communities here in the city.
Believe me, I understand it is unbelievably frustrating when we look at all the work to be done. But what is wrong with BELIEVING that things are getting better? What is wrong with making a documentary about all of those people out there offering their support and generosity to their neighbors?? I'm sure that it won’t sell quite as well. But Sheila Dixon cannot do it all on her own, O'Malley couldn't as well. It will take more people to get up off their butts and start being part of the solution and not part of the problem! Volunteer at a city school, hand out food, work at the Bea Gaddy foundation for a day. Make a documentary on the doctors in Baltimore offing help and aid to the people living on the streets, or the career centers helping people on the streets find jobs, or the neighbors that gather together to organize neighborhood clean ups and the neighbors that gather together at their local church that pray for peace in their streets??? How about spending more time in the streets to find all of the great things that people are doing for each other.
Like I said, our Baltimore City Officials need work, but they also need help. There is only so much that one person can do. Maybe a documentary on the struggles that the officials face and what people are doing in their community might motivate some people to get up and do something and not be so fearful of the city that they do nothing but complain.
Just a thought...
